Dr. Martin Stark (ILS – Research Institute for Regional and Urban Development)
15 November 2017, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
International Graduate Center for the Study of Culture, Giessen
The lecture is open to the public.

Over the last decade, Historical Network Research has established itself as a minor but attractive methodological approach in historical research, that goes beyond a purely metaphorical use of the network term. A substantial number of studies on diff erent topics and periods have shown that network theories and formal network methods derived from other disciplines can be fruitfully applied to selected bodies of historical sources. The lecture will introduce and discuss important concepts, methods and theories in the study of historical social networks. The discussion will be based on a case study about the importance of kinship relations in the practices of rural credit lending in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg in Southwestern Germany in the 19th Century.
