Title

Nothelffer-Rautenfeld Family Archive

Description

The Nothelffer-Rautenfeld Family Archive contains 185 archival items dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries. The largest part of the collection is devoted to materials on matters of inheritance and the ownership of various estates as well as on the financial affairs of the family. Also of note are several memoirs and a number of materials related to two family foundations set up to support family members in poverty. The connection between the two families came about through the marriage of Margaretha Carolina von Nothelffer and Reinhold Detlef Berens von Rautenfeld at the beginning of the 19th century. The Berens family became recognized nobility “under the name of Rautenfeld by means of an “Adelsdiplom” (the equivalent of letters patent) dated Vienna 1752” (DSHI_110_Nothelffer_Rautenfeld_149_1). The Adelsdiplom of the Nothelffer family dates from the year 1785 and was also issued in Vienna (DSHI_110_Nothelffer_Rautenfeld_20).

History/Provenance

The collection was purchased in 2012 (together with the Tiesenhausen family archive). An older record of the family archive in 166 numbers on index cards was acquired at the same time and incorporated into the collection under the number 168. However, not all archival items included in this record could be found. These items were nevertheless included in the new record and labeled “missing”.
