Reklaitis Lithuanian Archive (LAR): Documents Relating to Lithuania (History, Art History, Regional Studies, Culture) – Partial stock of the Document Collection

Description

The estate of Povilas Reklaitis (1922–1999) encompasses materials relating to the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, German-Lithuanian connections, and to the history of Lithuania’s population, art, and culture between the 15th and 20th centuries. Reklaitis began collecting during World War Two and continued for the rest of his life. His collection contains the estates of ten fellow academics and artists, mostly Lithuanians living in exile, including the legal expert and historian Dr. Jone Deveike and the politician and theologian Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Gaigalat. Of great importance is the correspondence between Reklaitis and numerous prominent figures who were active in the worlds of academia, journalism, and art, for example, Žimbutas Mikšys, Zenonas Ivinskis und Günter Grundmann. Reklaitis’ estate extends to 20 continuous meters of shelved archival items and is one of the most important collections on Lithuania in Germany.

History/Provenance

The written documents from the Reklaitis Lithuanian Archive (LAR) were transferred to the document collection (DSHI) in 2001. For the DSHI, the acquisition of these materials meant, not only an addition to the existing “Baltica” holdings, but also the collection’s “archival cornerstone” with regard to Lithuania. Prior to this time, the DSHI mainly housed archive documents related to the history of Estonia and Latvia. Lithuania was barely represented at all in the archive area. The LAR forms a whole group within the tectonics of the DSHI and is searchable online.
