Reklaitis Lithuanian Archive (LAR): Graphic materials relating to Lithuania (history, art history, regional studies, culture) – Partial stock of the Image Archive

Description

The picture holdings of the Reklaitis Lithuanian Archive (LAR) encompass around 2,800 media items (negatives, photographic prints, drawings, graphic prints, postcards, reproductions, photocopies). They not only document the works of art of Lithuania and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania but are also themselves an expression of how their collector, Povilas Reklaitis (1922-1999), perceived and wanted to present the country. Reklaitis was an art historian and librarian, who lived most of his life in exile. The LAR contains historic artworks from a period spanning the 16th and 19th centuries, including numerous portraits of Lithuanian and Polish nobility, engravings of battles, and cityscapes, but also works related to the theme of “Lithuanian lifestyle”. There are picture materials on, among other topics, folk culture, St. Casimir, militaria, costumes of the nobility, displaced persons, and the University of Vilnius. Some of the photographs date from the prewar and immediate postwar periods in Lithuania. The collection comprises Germany’s largest collection of materials on Lithuania.

History/Provenance

This collection of pictures related to the history and art history of Lithuania, which are held in the image archive of the Herder Institute, are the result of 40 years of meticulous work by its collector, art historian and librarian Povilas Reklaitis. From his perspective as a Lithuanian in exile, Reklaitis carefully reconstructed a vision of his homeland from thousands of fragments. The pictorial materials he collected served as source materials and illustrations for his publications, but he also wanted to build up a general art-historical collection on the topic of Lithuania. A number of his photographs of architectural and art monuments, as well as other subjects, date from the prewar and immediate postwar periods and were supplemented with photographs from other private collections, German libraries, museums, and antiquarian bookshops, as well as with original artworks. The partial collection, which was acquired by the image archive of the Herder Institute, was examined for the first time in 2001, before being counted and roughly sorted according to theme. After an in-depth review in 2003 and 2004, the materials that were not relevant to the image archive, such as written documents, publications etc., were handed over to other work areas of the Institute, like the document collection and the research library. The remaining collection in the image archive, consisting of around 2,800 photographs, negatives, postcards, pictures and diagrams, and illustrations, were inventoried.
