Research data of the project "Scientific infrastructure for art-historical monuments in East Central Europe" (FoKO)

Description

The international joint project FoKO places special emphasis on the specific achievements of art production in East Central Europe, an area that has been characterized by complex historical dynamics. Until now, these achievements have remained significantly under-appreciated. Documentation data and picture collections relating to a canon of outstanding buildings, monuments and artworks have been brought together from a range of international sources and made available for use. The goal here was to illustrate the many diverse interconnections that exist within the development of art in East Central Europe during the period from 1,000-1800 AD just as clearly as the competing historical-epistemological references. Within a virtual setting, this comparative perspective provides us with vivid illustrations and allows us to discover new aspects of the history of style and tradition, of cultural transfer, patronage, and how networks of artists and master builders formed during this period. The portal combines metadata (data model) with data that has already been entered, mostly related to architectural and art objects, as well as multilingual thesauruses of basic terms, and digital and digitalized photographic material.

History/Provenance

The photographic material used in the FoKO database was sourced from various photographic collections across a number of different countries and institutions. Each of these collections has its own history. The oldest originals of the photographs featured in the database date from the late 19th century. A large number were taken in first half of the 20th century, for example the photographs that were produced as part of the work of the “Society for the Protection of Historical Monuments” in Poland. Today, the collection is housed at the Art Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw (Instytut Sztuki PAN). Other photographic originals date from the post-war period, for example the Stefan Arczynski Collection (housed at the Herder institute since 2007) – a comprehensive documentation of the dramatically changing cultural heritage in Poland beginning in the 1950s. A number of photographs from the collections of the Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, Bratislava and Budapest date from the 1970s and 1980s and are an interesting contribution to the history of photography, also in terms of their subject material, and especially in view of the demarcation of the region at this time. Recent born-digital images of the highest technical quality on behalf of the German Documentation Center for Art History – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg. These form the finishing touches of the FoKO collection.
