Title

Partial Estate of the German-Baltic Historian Leonid Hans Nikolaus Arbusow (1882–1951)

Description

The partial estate of the historian Leonid Arbusow (the younger) (1882–1951) contains 61 individual archival items dating from 1940 to 1951. A few pieces of correspondence and a handwritten volume with addenda relating to the “Livländischen Urkundenbuch” (Livonian Book of Records) date from an earlier time. The collection is made up of personal documents, employment papers (mostly relating to the Livonian Chronicle of Henry and its new edition) and Arbusow’s correspondence. Particularly noteworthy are the proof copy of his last work “Liturgie und Geschichtsschreibung im Mittelalter“ (Liturgy and Historiography in the Middle Ages), Bonn 1951, and a number of small drafts on the topic of “Reformation in Livonia” and also on the Herder studies. A second part of the Arbusow estate forms part of the Paul Johansen estate in the archive of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck.

History/Provenance

When the Baltic Germans were resettled in 1939, Leonid Arbusow was able to take his personal estate from his time in Riga with him when he moved to Posen. In 1942, he handed these materials over to the archive of the “Sammelstelle baltendeutschen Kulturguts” (Collection Center for Baltic-German Cultural Heritage) in Posen and, in 1943, passed them on to Posen’s “Reichsarchiv” (Imperial Archive). In 1944, as part of the “safeguarding of archival material from the East”, the documents were given, initially, to the State Archive in Marburg and were later transferred to the depot in the salt mines at Grasleben. In 1945, they were moved to the British “zonal archive depot” at the Imperial Palace in Goslar. The transfer certificates (DSHI_100_Arbusow_11) show which files were originally handed over to the collection center in Posen and which were transferred to other intermediary storage facilities before eventually being moved to Goslar as well. These documents, together with some new materials that date from after 1945, remained in Arbusow’s apartment in Göttingen between 1945 and 1951. After his death, the collection was divided up. Paul Johansen acquired a smaller part, which was later transferred to the State Archive in Lübeck as part of his own estate. In 1966, the second part was handed over as a deposit of the Baltic Historical Commission to the document collection of the Herder Institute.
