Schumacher Collection: Photographs from East and West Prussia and the Baltic region during the 1930s/1940s

Description

On his journeys to East and West Prussia and to the Baltics in the 1930s and 1940s, Haro Schumacher photographed both the commonplace and the remarkable aspects of the regions he visited. The collection comprises almost 6,000 individual items, including negatives, prints and several hundred early color slides. In addition to photographs of well-known architectural and artistic monuments in the region, the collection also captures a living environment that no longer exists by documenting landscapes and the people connected with them. In this way, Schumacher portrayed the regional customs and everyday culture of smaller ethnic and religious groups. He photographed working environments such as the fishing industry and Tilsit cheese production as well as folklore museums. He also documented events of political importance at the time, such as referendums and border issues. Some of the photographs were taken during the period of German occupation when Schumacher was traveling through the Baltic region on behalf of the Berlin department of the German Labor Front. He documented the city of Riga, for example, both before and after its destruction.

History/Provenance

After the Second World War, Haro Schumacher, who originally came from Nida, opened a photography business in the Bavarian town of Oberammergau. Seeing no economic use in keeping the photographs he had taken on his journeys through East and West Prussia and the Baltics during the 1930s and 1940s, he sold the collection in its entirety to the Herder Institute. During the 1950s, more than 1,200 items were transferred to the Institute’s image archive in 13 separate deliveries. In 2016, after Schumacher passed away, the remaining part of his private archive, consisting of around 5,400 photographs, was purchased and added to existing collection at the Herder Institute.
