Title

Reklaitis Lithuanian Archive (LAR): Cartographic Materials on Lithuania – Partial stock of the Map Collection

Description

The Reklaitis collection forms part of the Herder Institute’s map collection and contains around 250 maps. It includes, roughly, 100 historic maps produced between 1600 and 1850, as well as a number of maps that illustrate the topography, population, and that relate to the regional and cultural studies of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In particular, the historic maps allow comparative analysis in historical geography, relating, for example, to the formation of statehood in the Early Modern period, to diversity, and to the conversion of geographical names in Lithuania and bordering regions. A number of the 20th century maps were produced in Lithuania, while others were produced in exile between 1940 and 1990, including "Mantnieks’ Baltic States: Eesti – Latvija – Lietuva”, which was published in Brussels in 1954. Beyond this, the collection includes a small number of maps, designed by Povilas Reklaitis himself, that date from the 1950s onwards and relate to the history and regional studies of Lithuania.
