Reklaitis Lithuanian Archive (LAR): Library on Lithuania (history, art history, regional studies, culture) – Partial stock at the Research Library

Description

In 2001, the library acquired around 3,000 bibliographic items from the Reklaitis Lithuanian Archive (LAR), including monographs, periodicals, newspapers, old prints, and brochures. With some of the rare books dating back as far as the 17th century, the collection includes “gray literature” from the 19th/20th century (for example, publications produced by writers living in exile from Lithuania after 1945) and also spans the period of Soviet Lithuania. There are a number of materials dating from the country’s renewed era of independence after 1990/1991 as well. Between 1973 and 1982, the art historian Povilas Reklaitis worked in the library at the Herder Institute (HI), where he obtained and cataloged works of Baltic literature. While living in exile in Germany, he built up a collection that spanned a broad range of topics across epochs. His LAR archive complements the Herder Institute’s library holdings, both spatially (as it includes items relating to the Baltic region in general, as well as the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Lithuania, Prussian Lithuania/Lithuania Minor, the Memel area, East Prussia, Kaunas, and Vilnius) and also thematically (covering, for example, art history, architecture, cultural history, national history, emigration, exile, Lithuanian Germans, and German-Lithuanian relations). A unique feature of the private LAR collection is that it contains rare books, works of “gray literature” that are very difficult to obtain, as well as volumes containing artistically designed ex libris bookplates or dedications from important figures, including Lithuanian artists living in exile (for example Žibuntas Mikšys).

History/Provenance

After 1955, Povilas Reklaitis worked on and off for the Herder Institute where his focus was Lithuanian art history. From 16.4.1973 until 30.9.1982, he held a permanent position at the Institute as “librarian for Latvian and Lithuanian literature” and, as such, was responsible for the general Baltic region in the library. As a connoisseur of the art and cultural history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Lithuania after 1945, he collected materials of all kinds relating to Lithuania for his archive (LAR), both to supplement existing holdings of the Herder Institute (HI), but also as duplicates. When the LAR was purchased in 2001, books, brochures, periodicals, newspapers (around 3,000 bibliographic items in total, including rare books from the 17th/18th centuries) from the collection were transferred to the research library. Since then, they have been incorporated as additions to the existing “Lithuanica” collections. Duplicates are generally not included, unless they contain particular dedications or ex libris bookplates (for example that of exiled Lithuanian artist Žibuntas Mikšys, who was born in Kaunas in 1923 and was a friend of Reklaitis). Between 2001 and 2006, around 2,200 individual archival items were verified and accounted for (including 908 monographs, 170 periodical titles with 468 volumes/ 1416 individual numbers; 75 of the periodicals are unique examples and come from the LAR, while the others supplemented the titles already held at the HI). In April 2016, as part of a summer school project, around 670 volumes entered on the HI OPAC were examined according to ex libris bookplates, dedications, commentaries, annotations, and LAR numbers. The results of these searches were documented.
