History/Provenance

The cartographic material that was gathered by the Berlin-Dahlem Publication Office (PuSte) during its years of operation (1931–1945) were confiscated in Coburg by the US Army together with other relocated materials (including books and photographs). After being temporarily stored in Oberursel in 1947/48, they were taken to Washington DC where they were held in the Library of Congress. Between 1957 and 1964, the former head of the PuSte, Johannes Papritz (1989–1992), succeeded in getting the collection sent to Marburg. In early 1958, the cartographic material was handed over to the Map Collection at the Herder Institute and has since been incorporated into its wider stock. Around 1959, the atlases were passed on the library and duplicates were removed from the collection and sent to other institutions.
