History/Provenance

At the end of the war, together with materials that had been relocated in Coburg, the volumes that had been gathered by the Berlin-Dahlem Publication Office during its years of operation (1931-1945) were confiscated by the US Army and sent to the United States. In 1957/58 and 1964, the former head of the PuSte, Johannes Papritz (1898-1992), succeeded, with the help of the Federal Foreign Office, in getting the book collection (together with other materials) sent to Marburg. Since then, this partial collection has been integrated into the library of the Herder Institute. The collection held by the Herder Institute makes up only a part of the original library at the PuSte, which comprised around 70,000 volumes. Over the course of various relocations (Berlin, Bautzen, Coburg, USA, Marburg), parts of the original collection were left behind. Alongside publications that the PuSte acquired through regular means, there are also volumes that were illegally confiscated by Nazi organizations like the State Secret Police, the Künsberg Special Unit, and the Reichsleiter Rosenberg Taskforce. Since 2016, the library has been carrying out a project to investigate the provenance of these books.
