Title

Aerial photographs of the German Luftwaffe 1942–1945: East Central Europe and Alps region

Description

The collection consists of 9,300 black and white aerial photographs that were produced by the Luftwaffe of the German Wehrmacht between 1942 and 1945. The majority of 6,300 vertical aerial photographs were taken during a series of reconnaissance flights over large areas of Brandenburg, Pomerania, East Prussia, Silesia and the province of Sachsen as well as in the voivodeship of Posen (poznanskie), Pomerelia (pomorskie) and Bialystok (bialostockie). The pictures are accessible via overview maps with image centre points, a printed index of places, and a collection catalog. The vertical aerial photographs of larger towns can also be searched for in the Herder Institute’s image catalog, where users can access preview images. A further 3,000 oblique aerial photographs taken from higher altitudes show areas of southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia.

History/Provenance

The aerial photographs were seized by the Allies after the end of the Second World War and taken to the archive of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) in Washington. In 1962, they were moved to the Military Geographic Office in Euskirchen, and subsequently handed over to the aerial photograph archive for German regional studies at the Institute for Regional Studies in Bad Godesberg. Photographs that did not concern the territory of the former FRG were given to the Herder Institute in the early 1970s; the rest are now held in the Federal Archive.
