Vom 11. bis 13. Mai 2026 findet in Prag die 53. Internationale ABDOS-Konferenz statt. Sie trägt den Titel "Bibliotheken und Exil: Bücher, Leser, Geschichten" und wird gemeinsam von der Slawischen Bibliothek (Národní knihovna ČR – Slovanská knihovna) und der ABDOS (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Bibliotheken und Dokumentationsstellen der Ost-, Ostmittel- und Südosteuropaforschung) organisiert. Als Ort, der einzigartige Bibliotheks- und Archivsammlungen zum Thema Exil vereint, steht Prag im Fokus der Tagung.

Die historischen Daten entstammen einer seriellen, vom Staatsarchiv Lodz gescannten Quelle aus der sog. „Heim-ins-Reich“-Aktion des NS-Staates im annektierten Polen. Die dabei entstandenen „Hofzuweisungslisten“ dokumentieren die geplante Ansiedlung von „Volksdeutschen“ aus den nach dem Hitler-Stalin-Pakt vom August 1939 an die Sowjetunion gefallenen Staatsgebieten Lettlands, Estlands und Polens.

By its very nature an archive is meant to preserve, it takes documents from history and stores them in a safe accessible environment for the enlightenment of future generations. This storage is something that is done indiscriminately, irrespective of time, irrespective of outside influence, irrespective of the thoughts and feelings of the past or present.

In early May 2018, I moved from Toronto to Marburg to begin my summer internship at the Herder Institute, seeking to “develop European perspectives.” I chose to come to Marburg exclusively because of the institute’s focus: as an MA student in European Affairs at the University of Toronto focusing on Central European history, interning at a center exclusively entirely to the study of Central European history represented a unique opportunity that I would not have elsewhere.
