Dehio Handbook of Art Monuments in Poland, Volume 3: Nordostpolen / Polska północno-wschodnia
Duration
2019 - 2026
Since the 1990s, the “Dehio Handbook of Art Monuments in Poland”—initiated by the Working Group of German and Polish Art Historians and Monument Conservators—has expanded the scope of the long-established Dehio Handbook beyond German-speaking borders to include Eastern Central Europe, a region characterized by unique historical and cultural ties to Germany.
For the third subproject, dedicated to northeastern Poland (Pomerania, Warmia and Masuria, the Suwałki region), the preliminary project (September 2017 to March 2019) laid the groundwork for the main project, which began in June 2019, in two respects: First, the scope of work was precisely defined, an initial selection of approximately 3,000 objects was made, and a working database containing essential geodata on the locations and objects was established; second, the research infrastructure (data model, functionalities) was designed and a prototype was set up based on the digiCULT.web system. Currently, a team of about 20 people is processing the selected objects. The content is expected to consist of metadata and descriptive texts for approximately 3,000 objects at about 1,500 locations, based on the planned results.

The Dehio projects are carried out in close cooperation and consultation with research institutions and heritage authorities in the partner countries in order to take into account diverse research perspectives. A distinctive feature of the publications on the countries of East Central Europe are the introductory texts on the history and art history of the respective regions; these are syntheses based on the current state of research, emphasizing phenomena and themes characteristic of the cultural landscape in question.
In parallel with the print publications in both languages, the texts are published on the specialized portal “DEHIO OME. Art Monuments in East Central Europe.”
