Dehio Handbook of Art Monuments in the Baltic Countries, Volume 1: Estonia / Eesti

The project on Estonia marked the start in 2019 of the series “Dehio Handbook of Art Monuments in the Baltic Countries,” which builds on the volumes of the “Dehio Handbook of Art Monuments in Poland” published since the 1990s. This marked a further geographical expansion of the long-standing Dehio Handbook beyond German-speaking borders into Central and Eastern Europe, where a unique situation exists due to the diverse historical and cultural ties with Germany.
The project was initiated by the Böckler-Mare-Balticum Foundation, which specializes in promoting research with a focus on the art and cultural history of the Baltic Sea region and, in particular, the Baltic states. It is being developed in close collaboration with the Herder Institute, the Dehio Handbook of Art Monuments in Poland, the Dehio Association, and Estonian partners. In the main project, which has been running since spring 2019, the objects are being processed by a team of about 15 people. The focus is on approximately 1,000 objects at around 460 locations. At the start of the project, funding for the implementation of the digital knowledge infrastructure, including the specialized portal “DEHIO OME. Art Monuments in East Central Europe,” was secured from the BMB Foundation through the ZEIT Foundation.

The Dehio projects are carried out in close cooperation and consultation with research institutions and heritage authorities in the partner countries in order to take into account diverse research perspectives. A distinctive feature of the publications on the countries of East Central Europe are the introductory texts on the history and art history of the respective regions; these are syntheses based on the current state of research, emphasizing phenomena and themes characteristic of the cultural landscape in question.
The texts in both project languages will be published successively on the specialized portal “DEHIO OME. Art Monuments in East Central Europe.”
