Emerging Cities – Urban development in Eastern Europe

Jointly developed by Eszter Gantner (†) and Heidi Hein-Kircher, the project focuses on urban development in Eastern Europe during the second half of the 19th century from a comparative perspective. The aim is to produce a series of publications that contribute to the understanding of urban development in Eastern Central Europe. The premise is that research on Eastern (Central) European history contains numerous desiderata relating to urban history, and the interplay of city, knowledge and key social stakeholders, which is a complex and only scantly researched area, offers both a methodological and theoretical challenge with the potential for innovation.
