Research Data Management
The Research Data Management Division supports researchers at the Herder Institute in the structured collection, processing, analysis, documentation, preservation, and publication of their research data—from the application stage through to archiving. In addition, the division carries out its own projects in the field of data-driven research.
The Herder Institute is a co-applicant in the NFDI4Memory consortium within the National Research Data Infrastructure and is particularly active in the area of data quality. We are also involved in the HERMES Data Competence Center and are a member of the DARIAH-DE network.

The division’s main areas of focus include:
- Providing guidance on data management issues for research projects and infrastructure initiatives
- Offering advice and support on digital research methods
- Developing, coordinating, managing, and promoting the Herder Institute’s data management framework
- Conducting training programs in the form of workshops on topics related to FDM, digital (research) methods, and data management in general
- Carrying out projects in the field of data infrastructure research
- Supervising interns in the field of data work
- Testing and providing solutions for automatic text recognition

Data management framework
The Research Data Management division is working in close collaboration with the departments and divisions to develop a framework for improving and standardizing data management at the Herder Institute. This framework consists of conventions for naming files and folders, for file formats, and for metadata embedded within files. Once an initial version is available, we will make it publicly available via Zenodo (documents are only available in German).
Infrastructure Services
Infrastructure Services
The division operates infrastructure for text recognition and data analysis. This includes an OCR4all instance and an R/R-Studio instance running on its own server.
For the long-term archiving of research data, we use the RADAR service, and we are also represented on its user advisory board.
