The Herder Institute’s in-house publisher holds publications in its archive that come from two different sources. These include, on the one hand, books and periodicals that were published by the Herder Institute after 1951 and, on the other, book series and individual publications that were published at the Herder Institute on behalf of the Johann Gottfried Herder Research Council (until Ende 1993), together with a number of works produced by other publishers. The publications deal with the history of East Central Europe since the early Middle Ages. All historical disciplines are represented in the archive, from art history to cultural history, and from political and social history through to economic history.

Alongside bibliographies and translations, initially produced using a mimeograph machine, various scientific publication series were also published by the Herder Research Council and produced in other publishing houses (for example, after 1953, the “Marburger Ostforschung” (Marburg Research on the East) at the Holzner Verlag) as well as two journals: the “Wissenschaftliche Dienst für Ostmitteleuropa” (Scientific Service for East Central Europe) from 1951 onwards, and, since 1952, the “Zeitschrift für Ostforschung” (Journal for Research on the East), which was renamed “Zeitschrift für Ostmitteleuropa-Forschung” in 1995 and, since 2018, carries the parallel title of “Journal of East Central European Studies”. Since the 1970s, the Herder Institute’s in-house publisher has gradually taken over the publication of journals and series.
