Holdings of the Map Collection of the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe

Description

The map collection of the Herder Institute encompasses around 50.000 maps of East Central Europe spanning from the 16th century until the present day. The focus of the collection is the 19th and 20th centuries and the regions that today make up Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Kaliningrad Region. The collection also contains materials related to the Institute’s own map production since the 1950s, as well as around 9,000 aerial photographs dating from the years 1942–1945. The maps contain information on a large and diverse range of topics: topography, settlements and infrastructure (railways, road networks), landscape and environment, human population, religions, languages, and much more. Users can search the collection according to geography or theme and scans can also be purchased.
