The Herder Institute is located on Marburg's Schlossberg hill in four historic buildings that frame a functional new building, the library and collection building. Its location directly next to the castle park offers a beautiful view of the city.

Library

We gather literature from the humanities and social sciences on and from East Central Europe, ie on the history, geography and culture of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as well as the historic German territories and the German settlements in East Central Europe. Apart from monographs and periodicals, we put an emphasis on collecting hard to find (“gray”) literature.

Press Collection

Press Collection

The press collection consists of a newspaper collection and a press clippings archive. The newspaper collection comprises press publications since 1945 from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia or, as the case may be, the Soviet Union. It also contains regional newspapers from towns and regions of the historical German Eastern territories.

We collect and open up space for image sources East Central Europe (currently approximately 622,500 units) to make these both the research and the interested public.

Document Collection

Document Collection

Our collection includes unprinted sources on the history and culture of East Central Europe, with a focus on the history of Estonia, Livonia and Courland, i.e. the present-day states of Estonia and Latvia. Of approximately 1300 linear meters of shelves, about 90% deal with the Baltic States.

Map Collection

Map Collection

The Map Collection offers approximately 55,000 topographic and thematic maps from the 16th to the 21st centuries as well as 9,300 vertical aerial photographs taken between 1942 and 1945 as reference holdings. The geographical focus lies on the areas of today’s states of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, whilst adjoining regions are also covered in order to guarantee content coherence.

Directions

Public transport

Marburg is situated at the railway line Kassel – Gießen – Frankfurt (Main). There is at least one connection per hour from either direction. From Marburg main station, line 10 runs once an hour (always 10 after, from 9.10) to the Herder Institute stop. For more details on the connections, please refer to the RMV.

By car

You can reach Marburg from the north and south via the Bundesstraße 3, leaving it at the Marburg-Mitte junction. From there you drive via Erlenring, Rudolphsplatz and Universitätsstraße to Wilhelmsplatz, where a steep approach via the streets Barfüßertor – Rotenberg – Sybelstraße and Lutherstraße begins. The institute is located in Gisonenweg directly on the Schloßberg.

On foot from the main station

The distance from the main station to the Institute is only about 2.5 km; however, it involves a steep climb. You can reach the institute via the streets Bahnhofstraße – Elisabethstraße – Roter Graben – Renthof – Hainweg – Schloß – Gisonenweg. The walking time is about 30-40 minutes.
