The Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe – Institute of the Leibniz Association in Marburg is seeking to fill a position for
Coordination (E13 TV-H) up to full-time „Living & Realtime Archives“ (LivArch)
temporary for a period of 36 months at the earliest possible date.
The Herder Institute focuses on the history and culture of East Central Europe. It conducts original research based on its extensive collections, including projects in the field of history and the collection-related cultural studies. The advertised position is in the Department of Digital Research and Information Infrastructures. In addition to cross-sectional tasks in the development of in-house research infrastructures as well as consulting activities, this department also carries out third-party funded projects.
The project „Living & Realtime Archives“ is funded by the Leibniz Association in the “Cooperative Excellency” program. The war in Ukraine has led to three significant changes in historical research: the emergence of new types of community-driven archives, the generation of archival material in real time, and the increased reliance on digital sources due to the inaccessibility of physical archives. LivArch aims to address these challenges, investigate digital preservation practices and establish forms of shared authorship between scholars, activists as archive creators and the many voices behind the testimonies that constitute the archive. In transnational collaboration, LivArch identifies ethical challenges, develops new epistemological concepts, reflects on the impact of digital archiving on historical research and supports researchers and initiatives in Ukraine that develop, perform and educate in the creation of digital archives through remote fellowships and workshops.
The consortium consists of the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe (project lead), the Leibniz Institute for European History, Mainz, the L’viv Centre for Urban History, L’viv; the Philipps-University, Marburg, the University of Applied Sciences, Darmstadt, the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH) Luxembourg, the Roy Rosenzweig Centre for History and the New Media and additional partner institutions in Ukraine and Germany.
As a part of your responsibilities you will:
- manage the project process including the monitoring of set milestones and deliverables;
- maintain exchange with the partner institutions and individual stakeholders;
- consult with the Herder administrative department regarding the project finances;
- support remote fellows and those travelling abroad in administrative issues
- take an active role in the assessment and provision of recommendations for metadata schemata relating to digital resources in realtime and living archives;
- organise the workshops for which the project lead is responsible (including a closing conference in Marburg);
- support and consult with partners providing workshops for other project milestones;
- prepare and present results in publications, technical recommendations, project reports and academic events
Your profile should include:
- a degree in a historical humanities discipline with further qualification or relevant professional experience in the digital humanities; or a degree in information science or computer science and proven proximity to historical humanities’ data;
- sound understanding of technical aspects of metadata in the humanities;
- experience with different types of data in historical research projects as well as with the issues and methods of digital history and source criticism;
- experience in dealing with humanities and cultural studies data, ideally social media archiving or web archives;
- very good spoken and written command of the English language;
- good command of both, German or/and Ukrainian are a welcome added bonus
- willingness to travel and attend workshops
Place of employment is Marburg, Germany.
We offer:
- a committed and friendly working environment
- a varied, independent and diverse job and the opportunity to help shape developments
- further education and training in the field of digital methods
