  • Authenticity in European Cities. Creating, Visualizing, and Contesting Urban and Built Heritage

    Start date: 16. March 2023
    End date: 17. March 2023
    Location: Potsdam
    Conference

International Conference, Potsdam March 16-17, 2023

Organising Team: Dr. Achim Saupe (ZZF), Dr. Anja Tack (ZZF), Prof. Dr. Christoph Bernhardt (IRS), Dr. Daniel Hadwiger (IRS)

The international conference will focus on how buildings, urban neighborhoods, urban spaces, and actors were and are perceived as “authentic”. The conference analyses processes of authentication in an interdisciplinary way in four sessions: Historical authenticity after World War II, Politics of identification and citizen initiatives, Emotions and urban authenticity, Gentrification and democratic participation. A public panel discussion on historical reconstruction in Berlin and Potsdam, a poster session with case studies from the research project “Urban Authenticity” and a city tour of Potsdam are also part of the conference program.

The conference is part of the research project “Urban Authenticity. Creating, contesting, and visualizing the built heritage in European cities since the 1970s” funded by the Leibniz Association. It is a collaboration of the Leibniz Institute for Research on Society and Space, the Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin, the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe, the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam, and the Association of Museums in Brandenburg.
