Information on OPAC map searches
The new acquisitions of the map collection are being catalogued through the participation of the Herder Institute in the HEBIS Association in PICA, and can be searched in the relevant online catalogues.
Unlike in the literature search, the search key "signatures" is used in the www catalogue in the case of online searches for current map material. For this reason, please select the key word "signatures" in the search mask instead of "key words from titles". Please be aware that, unlike searches using classification (KLS), the subject area represented by a Roman numeral also has to be entered as a Roman numeral when using the search key SIG or signatures. Naturally, the standard keys (title key words, corporations, authors, etc.) can also be used.
The basic signature generally comprises four components:
- Prefix "k" (for Karte [map])
- Regional allocation
- Subject area
- Sub-group of subject area.
Regarding the components "regional allocation", "subject area" and "sub-group of the subject area", please follow the library classification system (PDF file). With the exception of prefixes, individual components can be left out if the truncation sign "?" is used.
Using the search term "Signature SIG" and entering the command
"k 32 II ?"
as an example, the maps and atlases available and electronically listed in the map collection of the Herder Institute can be traced for geographic, regional and similar questions on Poland.
Alternatively you can also use the Advanced Search and select only "Kartenmaterial" [cartographic material] as kind of material in the lower part.
