The catalogue facilities of the map collection
Since 1997, new acquisitions to the map collection have been uploaded to the OPAC of the Institute's library or the association database of the Hessian Library and Information System (HeBIS). Since 2003, the entire holding of thematic maps listed as part of a recatalogueing project has also been available for online research through the OPAC.
In 2007, work started on the cataloguing of all topographic map series, which have gradually been made available for research using an online catalogue with interactive map indexes and a geographical map sheet search.
The titles of the early maps have been catalogued in the IKAR-database of old maps of the Joint Library Association (GBV) since 2003, which nine institutions have now joined. A joint OPAC is available for searches in the IKAR pool (approx. 252,000 map titles).
A printed register of places, a comprehensive catalogue of holdings and a database are available when searching the collection of aerial photographs. The database contains a special "image display" for each of the approx. 2,100 entries, which can be used to call up a view of the relevant image.
