Town Atlas of Silesia
The map collection of the Herder Institute
With 37,000 maps and 6,300 aerial photographs, the map collection offers a wealth of geographic and topographic information on East Central Europe as an indispensable principal source of materials for historical and geo-cultural research, as well as cartographic work. In addition, there are 500 atlases, and geographic and cartographic literature, which together form a basis for work on the spatial ties of the history of this region of wandering borders, the interweaving of cultures, languages and religions.
The political collapse of 1990, which finally led in 2004 to the entry of Central and Eastern European states into the European Union, led to a continuous increase in demand for maps and spatial data on this region, which is being met by the map collection of the Herder Institute through targeted acquisitions and modern listing systems (see available catalogues). The geographical focus lies on the areas of today's states of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, whilst adjoining regions are also covered in order to guarantee content coherence.
