Browser compatibility
You can view the web pages using current browsers (Internet Explorer from Version 5.5, Netscape Navigator from Version 6.0, Firefox, Opera). For optimal display, we recommend Microsoft Internet Explorer from Version 5.5, or Firefox.
Flexible layout
This Internet presence is flexibly designed and will adjust to the size of your browser window. The optimal display has a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels.
Font size
In order to change the font size, hold down the Ctrl key and move the scroll wheel on the mouse. Alternatively, you can change the font size using the browser settings:
Internet Explorer
In Internet Explorer up to Version 6, you can change the font size by going to the View menu, sub-item Text Size. In Version 7 of Internet Explorer, the setting is made through the Page button, sub-item Text Size.
Mozilla Firefox
In Firefox, you can increase and reduce the font size by going to the View menu, sub-item Text Size..
Navigation facilities
The pages are uniformly structured; the navigation and content are subdivided into separate areas. Directly at the start of the pages are hidden jump marks, through which you can jump directly to the content, main menu or search facility. Furthermore, in the table of contents there is a linked overview of all topics and subtopics offered in the Herder Institute's Internet presence.
Security certificate
When using Firefox 3, calling up the OPAC or the online shop may lead to clear warning messages.
We offer OPAC and the online shop through https (=SSL-encoded) and use an SSL certificate of the Deutscher Forschungsnetz (DFN) (German Research and Education Network). The SSL certificates of the DFN have been authenticated by Deutsche Telekom; however, the Telekom certificate is not yet included in Firefox as standard.
The handling of unknown certificates has been changed in Version 3 of the Firefox browser. It is now more laborious to import the certificates and the warnings shown in doing so are clearer: "Safe connection failed: ... uses an invalid security certificate ...".
To import the certificate, click on "Or you can add an exception", and then on "Add exception" on the next screen. Firefox will then report the following: "You are hereby circumventing the identification of this website by Firefox. Reputable banks, businesses and other public websites will not ask you to do this." Nevertheless, click on "Download certificate". Click on "Confirm security exception rule".
The certificate only has to be imported once. This will not be necessary when next calling up the website.
